Software Engineer - Optimization

About Verrus

Data centers should be valuable assets to their customers, the grid, and the local community such that we are able to give customers what they want, where they want it, while cities and utilities are actively seeking us to build in their region.

Verrus will build and operate next generation data centers that flexibly leverage its onsite infrastructure through the development of proprietary technology. Doing so will allow Verrus to provide grid services that facilitate the effective procurement of power and carbon free energy, and balance traditional and variable uptime workloads (e.g., AI/ML).

Verrus is led by industry veterans with experience at the largest data center development companies, delivering over 3 GW of data center capacity across four continents in their careers (representing over $10bn of investment).

About Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners (SIP)

Backed by Alphabet, Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, and Stepstone Group, SIP is a consolidated holding company that builds innovative technology-enabled infrastructure companies and projects that deliver positive social and environmental impact at scale. We believe that technology-enabled infrastructure will help to solve some of the world’s most pressing social and environmental challenges.

Following years of research and in collaboration with its current management, SIP formed Verrus to design, build, and operate the world’s most innovative data centers, leveraging unique technology to develop a scaled project portfolio that delivers significant financial, environmental, and innovation outcomes.

Role

Verrus takes a very technology-forward approach to designing data center infrastructure - we operate at the intersection of leading-edge electrical and mechanical engineering, control systems, and software engineering. As a result, software development at Verrus spans a broad space, including optimization and integration with physical infrastructure.

As an optimization software engineer at Verrus, your core responsibility will be to help design and build an innovative, extensible, and maintainable optimization engine. This system is central to Verrus’ mission; it is responsible for optimally controlling data center resources: renewable energy generation, battery dispatch to both data center and electricity grid, cooling, etc.

You will work closely with several teams across the company: software infrastructure to integrate the optimization engine in Verrus’ systems; hardware engineering to design accurate models; and decision support engineering to evaluate features and outputs.

Responsibilities

  • Help design, implement, and manage Verrus’ optimization engine. This is a distributed system at the heart of our software stack, spanning both on-premise and Cloud environments.
  • Formulate and implement leading-edge optimization models (linear/mixed-integer programming, machine learning) to control data center resources.
  • Build data pipelines and derive model inputs from a wide variety of sources, both internal and external to the data center.
  • Work with the product organization to plan Verrus’ technology roadmap and shape the future of Verrus’ systems.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering and product functions, including software infrastructure, hardware engineering, and product management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience formulating, implementing, and evaluating mathematical models (linear/mixed-integer programming, machine learning).
  • 5+ years of experience delivering projects with multiple stakeholders across cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to efficiently identify and resolve issues using problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Adaptability to work in a rapidly changing, fast-paced environment and picking up new technical areas of expertise.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD degree in engineering, computer science, or applied mathematics.
  • Experience interfacing with electrical grids or energy markets.
  • Experience maintaining mathematical models in production environments with tight SLAs.
  • Experience developing deep reinforcement learning models.

Compensation

The annual base salary range for this position in California is $180,000-$200,000. Salary is only one part of Verrus’ comprehensive compensation package, which also includes a discretionary bonus and general health benefits and paid time off.
